Historical Cemetery in Wild Acres'
The cemetery, located in the center of the Wild Acres' property, is the oldest known cemetery standing in Old Orchard Beach and is the burial site of the Googins Family.
The 1st settler of OOB was Thomas Rogers in 1638. Thomas Roger's daughter married Patrick Googins in 1718 and they had a son named John. John and his family members are the individuals buried in the cemetery in Wild Acres. It is believed and locally stated, that Thomas Roger's homestead and orchard were within the boundaries of the present Wild Acres' property.
Local historian, Dan Blaney, is currently working with the present owner of Wild Acres to restore and preserve this historical landmark. Years ago a group of vandals destroyed most of the existing stones. We hope to have the restorations completed by the 2006 season.
Maine's Oldest Family Campground
Wild Acres, along with many other properties, consisted of apple orchards. The "old" apple orchard is where the town took its name.
Wild Acres, the farm, was founded in 1749 and was a working farm of cattle and horses. The farm transitioned to a campground and received a state license in 1929. The property was a roadside service for people to set up a tent that wanted to be near the ocean.
The property went from the Googins, to the Deerings, to the Guilfords, to the Lajoies to the Rouleaus and was bought by the Ahearns in 1967.
Morgan Management bought the park in 2005.
